Quite a bit of excitement at our house at 6 a.m. today. I woke up to mommy excitedly telling me to get up and see a bear. Briscoe had chased it up a tree in our driveway. It was pretty cool.

We had suspected there was a bear lurking around because Briscoe was barking at the woods a lot lately in the middle of the night. After scurrying up another tree, the bear, which daddy says is a youngster, took off across the road and into the woods, Briscoe on its heels.  I don’t think it’ll come back to our house again–seeing mommy taking pictures in nothing but underwear and a tank top is enough to scare anyone away.

Boys & their toys

This is the latest reason mommy never gets to park her car in the garage – a ’66 MG, courtesty of Aunt Lisa and Uncle Dave, who didn’t want it in their driveway anymore. Daddy fixed it up, shined it up and got it purring like a kitten, and we did laps up and down the cul de sac yesterday.

3, 2, 1 … blastoff

My very talented, creative mommy finished the “space” part of my space-themed room by stencilling gold stars all around the planets she put on my wall.  You’ll notice there are nine planets (and the sun). Mommy debated putting Pluto up since the scientific community abandoned the far-away planet in recent years. She wondered if I’d be tainted by her actions. Would I be the only seventh grader in Earth Science class thinking there are nine planets? Well, for arts’ sake, she put Pluto up — it balances the wall nicely.

In other news….I’ve become quite the checkers phenom. Mommy and daddy were quite surprised to discover I could kick their butts, and no one ever taught me to play. Checkers is the first thing I want to do when I wake up, and the last thing I do before I go to bed. I have beaten grandmas, grandpas and recently Aunt Lisa (below) — in fact, I wiped the floor with her. She was quite shocked. No one expects a five year old to beat them at aything, except maybe Candyland or Chutes & Ladders. I play to win. I put a lot of thought into every move and its consequences. I’ve been known to cry when mommy wins, but for the most part, I’m tough.
