Play ball

It’s baseball season again. No T-ball for me this year. I’m hitting a real pitch. I’ve got a a real uniform. And I’m ‘sposed to get a “family jewels” protector, although  daddy doesn’t think it’s necessary quite yet.

Opening day was Saturday and my first game was tonight.  Check out the slideshow below.

I (heart) NY

Mommy and I headed south to the big city for three days of sightseeing. Mommy said showing me the sights was a perfect occasion to do touristy things like ride a double-decker bus, which was number two on my list. Number one was the Statue of Liberty.

We stayed in a small hotel on the Theatre District/Hell’s Kitchen line — walking distance to the hustle and bustle of Times Square, but away from the commercialism. I ate the best Belgian waffles ever at a local diner, twice.

We squeezed in a lot of things over three days: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, bus tour of downtown, South Street Seaport, Times Square, Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Islands, and the Intrepid Museum. We had various relatives join us during our stay. Grandma Jean met us Wednesday and Uncle Brian came down Thursday. They both left Thursday night, replaced by daddy, who hopped on a train after work.

It was great to see daddy, but mommy was not happy when he undid all the rules she had worked hard to enforce — like don’t run into the street chasing pigeons, don’t cross the street until the sign tells you too, even if all the locals are dodging cars, and don’t shoot the “arrow” from the new Nerf bow and arrow (I bought it with my bday $$ at the Times Square Toys R Us) at the hotel walls/ceiling.

Below are some photos from our adventure:

Mommy’s 40th birthday was a comedy of errors. Nothing went quite right on the health and injury front. By 7 p.m., mommy was on the couch with a hot pad around her neck, and daddy was elevating his foot, which was being iced by a bag of frozen corn.  Daddy and mommy kept laughing at the irony of being laid up with aching joints and muscles now that they’re both 40.

Let’s start at the beginning. Mommy woke up really tired. She has two vertebrae in her neck that are narrowing (this is not uncommon) and sometimes cause pain and a pinched nerve. It  was acting up for the first time in months, so she didn’t sleep well. Plus, she  had a  weird infection in her belly button, which she discovered was the culprit in making her nausea all week. She also kept saying Mother Nature brought her a gift  Not sure what that meant, but it didn’t sound nearly as exciting as the Tooth Fairy bringing me dollar bills. Mommy wasn’t having a good day. But she toughened up and agreed that daddy’s idea of a hike at Kent Falls followed by dinner would be fun.

And it was fun. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, a little exercise, but at some point, an injury to daddy’s ankle that no one ever saw happen, even daddy. In the middle of dinner, daddy started cringing in pain.  Then I mouthed off in the car and daddy hit the brakes, causing mommy’s head to lunge forward unexpectedly. By the time we were home, daddy couldn’t walk; mommy couldn’t turn her head to the left.   Mommy finally talked daddy into going  to the local emergency walk-in clinic. He came home with an air cast and a diagnosis of a sprained ankle.

Tomorrow, mommy will make an appointment with the physical therapist for a tune up. So far, mommy says, 40 hurts. Hopefully, someone will be able to get out of bed and cook me breakfast tomorrow.

Last week, I drew this picture of mommy "getting old." Quite ironic.

Bunnies and Fairies

We had not one but two visits by never-been-seen-by-children magical creatures the past few days. First, the Easter Bunny, who delivered some allergy-friendly candy and my favorite toy of the moment, bakugans. Then Monday night, the tooth fairy (mine is named Esmelda), mader her fourth trip under my pillow. I always leave Esmelda a question in my tooth box. This time I asked her what she does with all the teeth. Turns out she buries them in the woods and they grow into wildflowers.  Pretty cool.

Mommy says I’m a toothless wonder:

Here are some photos from the weekend, which was exceptionally warm and beautiful.
